About PAL

PAL Toronto is built on talent, commitment and made to last!

PAL Toronto is a community of people who embrace their passion and life-long commitment to the professional performing arts and affiliated industry.

Residents include those who are recipients of the Order of Canada, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards (GGPAA), as well as distinguished international, provincial, and civic honours.

PAL Canada Foundation supports chapters across Canada. They include PAL Vancouver, PAL Stratford, and PAL Ottawa. Each has its own mandate, eligibility, and application process. Other PAL organizations, under development, are in Halifax, Winnipeg, and Calgary.

PAL Toronto is Canada's first residence for performing arts professionals.

The building began as the dream of a group of industry leaders. They appealed to unions and associations for support - ACTRA, the Actors Fund of Canada, Canadian Actors' Equity Association, and the American Federation of Music. Obtaining seed money, they began a Needs and Feasibility Study of union members, worked with local MPPs, consulted an architect, and found the ideal downtown location.

In 2002, PAL Toronto (at the time known as PAL Place) went to Toronto City Hall, and asked that the performing arts profession be recognized as a special sector to qualify for government support. Gaining this recognition was a milestone for the arts in Canada.

The Performing Arts Lodges (PAL) Toronto is a not-for-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is: To provide affordable housing and support services for the aging, disabled and needy members of the performing arts, and associated industries from across Canada. (as per the Corporate Mandate of 1986) Charitable Reg. No. 119091361RR0001

I love living here and give thanks, every day, that I get to live in such a supportive community, in such a wonderful environment. I’ve been here for 15 years, and I’ve met so many people. Being home for two years, during Covid, and part of the time dealing with health issues, I appreciate all the support from everyone. Thank you, PAL People
